HC Deb 12 December 1969 vol 793 cc192-3W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department why, when charges or allegations are made against police officers and an investigation is instituted, the officers concerned are suspended on only two-thirds pay, subsequently recovering the remaining one-third if the investigations are proved unfounded; whether he will arrange that suspension should involve no loss of pay or withholding of salaries until the investigations or subsequent court cases prove the officers guilty; and under what statutory authority the present practices are carried out.

Mr. Elystan Morgan

Suspension allowance of two-thirds pay is payable under Regulation 17 of the Police Discipline Regulations 1965, which are themselves made on the authority of Section 33 of the Police Act, 1964. My right hon. Friend is discussing the rate of suspension allowance with the Police Council.
