HC Deb 04 December 1969 vol 792 c350W
Mr. Cordle

asked the Minister of Overseas Development how many United Kingdom doctors and nurses are currently serving in Nigeria under the auspices of her Department; and how many are likely to be sent there in 1970.

Mrs. Hart

There are seven doctors and nine nurses currently serving in Nigeria whose salaries are wholly financed by my Ministry under the Special Commonwealth African Assistance Plan. Most of them are serving in the Child Medical Care Unit at Enugu. I would hope to maintain these numbers during 1970.

In addition there are 36 doctors and 23 nurses under direct contract to the Nigerian authorities, whose salaries are supplemented by my Ministry. I cannot forecast the exact numbers who will be recruited in 1970, but I would expect the numbers in post to remain at about the present level.
