Mr. William Price

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how much was paid in tax by building societies during the last 12 months for which figures are available.

Mr. Taverne

The amount of corporation tax due from building societies in 1967–68 is estimated at £14 million.

Building societies also pay income tax, mainly at a composite rate in respect of dividends and interest payable to investors; the amount due in 1968–69 is estimated at £151 million.
