§ Mrs. Ewing
asked the Minister of Transport what investigations his Department has carried out to ascertain the effect of the use of seat belts in preventing injury in road accidents; and whether accidents are analysed for this purpose in Scotland, England or Wales.
Mr. Bob Brown
The Road Research Laboratory is carrying out a continuous survey of the effectiveness of seat belts in preventing injuries to car occupants. In addition a special team, including medical staff, is studying aspects of injuries to road users and this can be expected to yield further information on the effects of the use of safety belts.
Data for the survey have been obtained from over 2,000 accidents in England, Scotland and Wales.
