asked the Minister of Transport what progress has been made with the construction of the A19 road in the county of Durham; and when he expects the work to be completed.

Of the 12 schemes making up the comprehensive programme of improvement of the A19 in Durham, four are now complete. Work is at present in progress on three schemes, of which one will be completed at the end of the year. The remaining five are in preparation.

Apart from the major works involved in the Teesside Diversion, it is aimed to complete this comprehensive improvement in Durham by 1971.
