HC Deb 04 December 1968 vol 774 c484W
Mr. Oakes

asked the President of the Board of Trade if he will seek to change the name of the Inspectorate of Weights and Measures to the Consumer Advisory Service.

Mrs. Gwyneth Dunwoody

I have no power under the Weights and Measures Act, 1963, to direct local weights and measures authorities to designate their departments in any particular manner, and I would be reluctant to take any action which might suggest to the public at large that inspectors of weights and measures are appointed solely to take care of consumer interests. The legislation under which inspectors are appointed is designed to protect both sellers and buyers.
