Sir R. Russell

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer why the staff of the Treasury has increased from 1,755 in 1967–68 to 1,840 in 1968–69, as shown in the Appendix to the Civil Estimates. 1968–69, Class I, Vote 3.

To improve efficiency and methods of control of Government expenditure in the public service as a whole; the bulk of the increase in the Estimate is in posts with responsibility for computers, operational research, organisation and methods and training.

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer why the professional section of the senior staff of the Treasury has been increased from 16 in 1967–68 to 21 in 1968–69, as shown in the Appendix to the Civil Estimates, 1968–69, Class I, Vote 3.

Two new appointments have been made with responsibility for advising on the expenditure of the public sector of the economy; the post of Economic Adviser to the Treasury has been filled again after a short gap; a Deputy Chief Scientific Officer has been appointed to head the operational research Division; and a post in the Treasury Medical Service has been regraded as Senior Medical Officer.
