HC Deb 11 April 1968 vol 762 c317W
Mr. Eldon Griffiths

asked the Secretary of State for Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement on his recent visit to the Far East, and his talks with the Sultan of Brunei.

Mr. George Thomson

The purpose of my visit to the Far East was to lead the British Delegation to the Meeting of the Council of the South-East Asia Treaty Organisation which was held in Welling-ten on the 2nd and 3rd of April. On the way back I took the opportunity to break my journey in Brunei which I had not previously visited, and to meet the new Sultan. I had informal discussions both with him and his father, the previous Sultan, and I am happy to say that they both readily accepted my invitation to visit London later this year for a general discussion on matters of mutual concern.
