asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether the substantial increase in murders and crimes of violence in Scotland which has taken place in recent years has continued in the figures of such crimes for the first quarter of 1968.

As my right hon. Friend explained to the hon. Gentleman on 23rd October last, statistics of murder are compiled for complete years only. The figures for crimes of violence vary so much from time to time that it would be unwise to deduce a trend from figures over a short period.—[Vol. 751, c. 380.]
