asked the Secretary of State for Economic Affairs (1) whether he will, before introducing a new prices and incomes policy, invite the Trade Union Congress and the Confederation of British Industry to provide him with additional information concern the effects of current nationalisation measures on the cost of living;

(2) whether he will, before introducing a new prices and incomes policy, hold consultations with the Trades Union Congress and the Confederation of British Industry concerning the effects of taxation changes on the standards of living of the individual.

asked the Secretary of State for Economic Affairs (1) whether he will, before introducing a new prices and incomes policy, invite the Trades Union Congress and the Confederation of British Industry to provide him with additional information concerning the effects of taxation changes on the standards of living of the individual;

(2) whether he will, before introducing a new prices and incomes policy, invite the Trades Union Congress and the Confederation of British Industry to provide him with additional information concerning the effects of devaluation of the £ sterling on the internal purchasing power of the £ sterling.

Mr. Shore

The new phase of the productivity, prices and incomes policy was cutlined in the Budget Statement and the Government took into account all relevant considerations, including the effects on the cost of living of devaluation and Government measures.

My right hon. Friend the Minister of Labour and I have had discussions with both the Trades Union Congress and the Confederation of British Industry about the new phase of productivity, prices and incomes policy.
