§ Mr. David Priceasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what steps he is taking in conjunction with the Arts Council to ensure that in all theatres, opera houses, concert halls, museums and galleries which are in receipt of public moneys, reasonable provision is made for access by disabled persons, especially those in wheel-chairs.
§ Miss Jennie LeeFollowing an approach from the Central Council for the Disabled, last year, I discussed this question with the Arts Council who are taking steps to ensure that suitable provision is made in the case of all new buildings where the Council is making a capital grant.
I am confident that artistic institutions working in existing buildings will do their best to help disabled people wherever practicable.
§ Mr. David Priceasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether, 34W before giving final approval for the plans for the new National Theatre, he will ensure that reasonable provision is made for access by disabled persons, especially those in wheel-chairs.
§ Miss Jennie LeeI agree that this is most important. The present plans of the National Theatre provide for access by disabled people in wheel-chairs. The final extent of the provision for disabled people within the auditorium will be a matter for consideration by the South Bank Theatre Board.
