§ Mr. Arthur Lewisasked the Minister of Transport whether she is aware that in the Greater London area alone during the calendar year ended 1966 there were 146,000 cases of unlicensed vehicles reported and that excluding lorries and heavy vehicles this was approximately a loss to the Treasury of £1,460,000, and that the 24,800 who paid a mitigated penalty only contributed £96,000; and what action she proposes to take to ensure a full tax revenue from this source in 1967.
§ Mr. John MorrisAs regards mitigated penalties, I would refer my hon. Friend to that reply given to his Question on 3rd352W March. The extent of evasion is comparatively small, but, as my hon. Friend knows, further measures to combat it are under consideration. As these might involve legislation I cannot go into details at this stage.—[Vol. 742, c. 176.]
