§ 57. Mr. Fisherasked the Postmaster-General if, as a measure of economy he will introduce garden gate mail deliveries and also box mail deliveries on the ground floor of blocks of flats, which has proved an acceptable system in the United States of America and in Canada; and whether he will estimate the annual saving which would result.
§ Mr. Edward ShortWe already do what we can to encourage provision of ground floor boxes in blocks of flats and offices. We have tried garden gate boxes; they were not favoured by the residents. Possible savings were earlier estimated at between £1½ and £2 million a year. We are considering various possibilities and are bringing our estimate of savings up to date.
