asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what proposals he has to amend primary school teacher training courses to ensure that more nursery teachers are available when the Plowden proposals for the extension of nursery education are implemented.

My right hon. Friend is still considering the Plowden proposals, and is awaiting the comments of the teachers and local authority associations on them. The number of students taking nursery or nursery/infant courses has risen each year since 1964.
