§ 43. Mr. Hamlingasked the Attorney-General what representations have been made to him concerning the provision of legal aid for tenants being harassed by landlords and who seek the protection of the courts.
§ The Attorney-GeneralNone. Landlords who harass their tenants are liable to prosecution under Section 30 of the Rent Act, 1965. Such proceedings are normally instituted by the local authority. Legal aid is already available for any civil proceedings which tenants may wish to bring against their landlords.
§ 47. Dr. Summerskillasked the Attorney-General if he will take steps to make legal aid available to persons who wish to be legally represented when appearing before administrative tribunals.
§ The Attorney-GeneralEconomic circumstances do not permit any extension of legal aid at the present time, nor would it be appropriate in all administrative tribunals.
