§ Mr. Hugh D. Brownasked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many private traders and local authorities in Scotland have received grants or loans 441W in each of the last five years towards the erection of new abattoirs, the installation of new equipment in abattoirs and the reconstruction of existing abattoirs; what was the total amount of such grants and loans in each category; and what was the largest single grant in each year.
§ Mr. Ross:Grants and loans in respect of the erection of new slaughterhouses and the installation of equipment and reconstruction of existing slaughterhouses provided by private traders are administered by the Board of Trade; but my right lion. Friend is unable to provide the information in the form requested without disproportionate effort and expense. There is no specific statutory provision for the making of loans to local authorities for the erection, equipping or reconstruction of slaughterhouses; but borrowing consent has been given by my Department to 34 local authorities under the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1947 as follows:—
