asked the Minister of Labour if he will give a list of Welsh employment exchanges which have a percentage of unemployment below the national average, specifying for each area the percentage of unemployed persons.

In the following four Employment Exchange or travel-to-work areas in Wales the percentage rate of unemployment at 13th November, 1967, was below the rate for Great Britain (2.5):—

  • Brecon (2.2*).
  • Carmarthen (2.1).
  • Shotton (1.8*).
  • Denbigh (1.6).
  • *Travel-to-work area.

asked the Minister of Labour if he will state the proportion of unemployed persons in England, Scotland and Wales, respectively, who are under 20 years of age.

Age analyses of the registered wholly unemployed are made in January and July each year. In July 1967 about 12 per cent., 16 per cent. and 17 per cent. of all persons registered as wholly unemployed in England, Scotland and Wales, respectively, were under 20 years of age.

Mr. Marten

asked the Minister of Labour in how many months in the 13 years up to October 1964 unemployment stood at 500,000 or above; and in which months in 1967 unemployment stood at 500,000 or above.

The total number registered as unemployed in Great Britain exceeded 500,000 on seventeen occasions between November 1951 and October 1964 and in the months of January to May and August to November in 1967.
