§ 33. Mr. Arthur Lewisasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science on what date, for what purpose and to whom, he or his Department disclosed that he was to appoint a committee of investigation into football and that the chairman would be the hon. Member for Northwich and that the hon. Member for Birmingham, All Saints, would be a member of the committee; and why this information was not first given to the House of Commons.
§ Mr. Denis HowellI announced to the House on 9th February last year that the Government were offering to the football authorities a comprehensive inquiry into the state of football. There have been conversations and I have made preliminary inquiries, and I can only assume that the Press comments to which my hon. Friend refers arise from these.
However, I am not yet in a position to announce the terms of reference or the membership of the Committee but I hope to do so shortly.
