Mr. David Steel

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland when he expects to make a decision about the location and development of a dual carriageway or major trunk route between Newcastle and Edinburgh; and whether this was considered in the Border Study commissioned by the previous administration.

At present the limited resources which can be made available are being devoted to improvements on Al and A68. When the planing of the major expansion in the Western Borders, in accordance with the White Paper on the Scottish Economy, has been carried further, we will reconsider the status of all four of the main routes through the Borders.
