Mr. J. E. B. Hill

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what was the average cost of a new primary, secondary and special school place, respectively, in 1945, 1951, 1959, 1964 and today; and what average costs were used for the calculations in the National Plan.

many qualified scientists and engineer have left Great Britain to take up employment overseas since October, 1964

Mr. Prentice

No comprehensive in formation is yet available on the emigration of qualified scientists and engineer since the end of 1964. The estimates for 1964 show that about 7,000 scientists and engineers emigrated, and that there were about 4,500 immigrants. Many of the emigrants left not to enter employment but to continue their studies or to engage in research, and a significant proportion return.
