83. Earl of Dalkeithasked the Minister of Transport whether she will instruct the Road Research Laboratory to examine the feasibility of instituting a differential maximum speed limit on motorways in place of the flat rate 70 miles per hour limit for different classes or makes of private motor vehicle according to their varying degree of controllability at high speeds and to make a report.
§ Mr. John MorrisNo. Apart from the difficulty of determining what speed limit should be applied to each different make and model of car, it would have to be taken into account that control at high speeds depends also on the age of the vehicle. The application and enforcement of such a system would be quite impracticable. However, in reviewing the experimental 70 m.p.h. limit in conjunction with the Road Research Laboratory we shall take account of any evidence that may emerge in support of different limits on motorways for different classes of vehicles.
