HC Deb 21 February 1966 vol 725 cc6-7W
59. Mr. Hugh Jenkins

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, following the report of the ad hoc committee on Oman and the resolution of the General Assembly of the United Nations, which deplores the attitude of Her Majesty's Government in refusing to co-operate with the United Nations Committee, if he will obey the call of the General Assembly for the withdrawal of British troops from the territory.

Mr. George Thomson

Oman is part of the independent Sovereign State of Muscat and Oman with which Her Majesty's Government have long had friendly relations. The only British troops in Oman are about forty officers and non-commissioned officers serving with the Sultan's Armed Forces on secondment. In this respect and others, the General Assembly resolution to which my hon. Friend refers was inaccurate and unacceptable, being based on a completely false view of Her Majesty's Government's relations with the Sultanate.
