asked the Minister of Transport (1) how many cases of unlicensed vehicles kept or used on the public roads were reported to the Greater London Authority between 1st April and 31st December, 1965;

(2)how many owners of unlicensed vehicles reported to the Greater London authority between 1st April and 3lst December, 1965, were found to have complied with the law by correctly applying for such licences;

(3)how many of the owners of unlicensed vehicles reported to the Greater London authority between 1st April and 31st December, 1965, have subsequently paid the Road Fund Tax; and how many have been prosecuted.

I am informed that between 1st April and 31st December, 1965, the Greater London Council received 57,065 reports of unlicensed use or keeping of motor vehicles on public roads. 9,118 owners were found to have complied with the law by correctly applying for licences and 17,234 subsequently took out licences following cautions or the payment of mitigated penalties. Proceedings have been instituted in 4,713 cases, 2,486 of which have so far been completed. Some 20,000 cases are still under investigation.
