HC Deb 02 February 1966 vol 723 c231W
75. Mr. Spriggs

asked the Minister of Transport how many railway workshops were closed or partially closed in each year since 1962; how many railway workshop staff were made redundant as a result of this policy; and how many were given training courses to fit them for other work.

Mr. John Morris

The total number of staff given training courses cannot be readily ascertained. The following is the informal ion about closures and redundancy:

BRITISH RAILWAYS WORKSHOPS
Redundancies due to closure, partial closure, or curtailment of major activities of Works, 1962–65*
A B C
Year Number of Works affected Staff-Redundant
1962 17 2,326
1963 25 8,126
1964 18 4,462
1965 13 1,648
TOTAL 1,6562†
* The number of works affected over the period is 29. Column B shows the number within this total at which staff became surplus in each year.
† 4,346 of this total took alternative railway employment.
