HC Deb 04 March 1965 vol 707 cc298-9W
94. Mr. Brooke

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many persons are in prison for debt.

Sir F. Soskice

7,047 persons committed by county courts and 3,669 civil process prisoners committed by magistrates' courts were received into prison in 1963, the latest year for which complete returns are available. During that year it is estimated that an average of about 200 persons committed by county courts and of about 260 civil process prisoners committed by magistrates' courts would have been in custody at any one time.
