§ 76. Mr. Francis Noel-Bakerasked the President of the Board of Trade if he will take steps to ensure independent testing, accurate labelling and informative and honest advertising of goods in order to protect the consumer against irrelevant and dishonest claims and inflated prices.
§ Mr. JayThe British Standards Institution and other bodies already provide independent testing facilities. The revised merchandise marks legislation which I am preparing will provide a general power to require informative labelling of specified classes of goods. It will also prohibit false or misleading trade descriptions in advertisements and otherwise. I shall consider in the light of experience of these arrangements whether further action by the Government is necessary and practicable.
