§ 58. Mr. Longdenasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many persons are employed by the State in 1963 in the Civil Service; and what was the total figure employed in 1951.
Mr. MacmillanThe number of civil servants employed at 1st April, 1951, were 675,400 non-industrial and 399,600 industrial, and at 1st October, 1963, 689,600 non-industrial and 357,700 industrial employees. Excluding the Post Office the numbers were, at 1st April, 1951, 426,600 non-industrial and 328,300 industrial, and at 1st October, 1963, 414,900 non-industrial and 257,800 industrial employees.
