HC Deb 26 March 1963 vol 674 c136W
39. Mr. Pentland

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what recent consultations he has had on proposals to extend schemes involving capital expenditure in the North-East of England.

Mr. Barber

A number of measures have been announced in recent months which will increase public investment expenditure in the North-East.

Mr. Pentland

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what recent consultations he has had on proposals to extend service and Government Departments in the North-East of England.

Mr. Barber

As my right hon. Friend the Chief Secretary announced to the House on the 25th February, Sir Gilbert Flemming has been appointed to review all Government work at present located in London and to recommend what work could be moved elsewhere. The needs of the North-East of England for additional employment will be fully considered in deciding where to locate work which is recommended for dispersal. Under existing plans the work of over 2,000 staff in the Savings Certificate Division of the Post Office is to be moved to Durham.
