HC Deb 18 July 1963 vol 681 cc76-7W
Mr. Ellis Smith

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government and Minister for Welsh Affairs (1) if he will make a statement on the response made by local authorities as a result of the book and circular issued by his Department several years ago on the need for the planting of more trees and shrubs and for the saving of trees from destruction; and what further action it is intended to take;

(2) if he will make a statement on the action taken by local authorities since his Department's last circular on the need for cleaning and beautifying towns and cities, and the planting of turf, plants and other vegetation; and what further action is to be taken.

Mr. Corfield

Work of this kind by local authorities, voluntary organisations and others continues to be widely reported in the Press and technical journals. This shows a welcome awareness of the benefit that towns can get from sensible municipal management and from landscaping. These subjects have been referred to in booklets issued recently by the Department about improving town centres, reclaiming derelict land, and landscaping for flats; and my right hon. Friend will continue to encourage the good work whenever he can.
