§ 44. Mr. W. Hamiltonasked the Minister of Labour how many jobs have been lost in Scotland in the first six months of this year; and what are the comparable figures for each of the other Regions.
§ Mr. HareI estimate that about 13,400 workers were discharged as redundant in Scotland during this period. I am circulating in the OFFICIAL REPORT a table showing comparable figures for other parts of the country. The figures given do not necessarily represent the numbers who became unemployed since they include workers transferred by their employers to other jobs.
The following is the table:
*Approximate number of workers discharged as redundant during period January to June, 1962 Scotland … 13,400 Northern … 6,500 Yorkshire and Lincolnshire … 5,900 Eastern and Southern … 6,600 London and South Eastern … 7,800 South Western … 3,100 Wales … 5,100 Midlands … 8,700 North Western … 12,900 * These figures are only estimates based on reports received by local offices from employers; they are not comprehensive and relate largely to manufacturing industries and mining. They include some workers who were declared redundant but were subsequently reemployed by their employers in other establishments.
