HC Deb 11 December 1962 vol 669 c43W
Mr. Wainwright

asked the Parliamentary Secretary for Science what research he is conducting at the Warren Spring Laboratory of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, or elsewhere at grant-aided research associations, into pollution of the atmosphere caused by internal combustion engines.

Mr. Denzil Freeth

The Warren Spring Laboratory is collaborating with the Ministry of Transport in devising test procedures for roadside measurement of diesel-powered motor vehicle exhaust smoke. The British Internal Combustion Engine Research Association is studying the effect of combustion system design on the concentration of nitrogen oxides in the exhausts of diesel engines. Work at the Motor Industry Research Association on pollution from petrol engine exhausts is related mainly to the Californian anti-smog legislation, which requires reduction of crankcase emissions of hydrocarbons and exhaust emissions of hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide. M.I.R.A. is co-operating with member firms in the study of the problems of completing the combustion of constituents in the exhaust gases and in the development of both direct flame and catalytic after-burner devices.
