HC Deb 19 April 1962 vol 658 c113W
64. Mr. Marlowe

asked the Lord Privy Seal whether he is aware that two British subjects. Mr. and Mrs. Peter Scott, have been in jail in Spain since last September for non-payment of a fine of some £9,000 in respect of an alleged offence of attempting to export works of art from Spain; whether, in view of the fact that they were ignorant of the Spanish law in this respect, he will make representations for their release: and whether he will make a statement.

Mr. P. Thomas

Every effort has been made to obtain fair and proper treatment for Mr. and Mrs. Scott, but, as my hon. and learned Friend will realise. Her Majesty's Government have no standing to intervene in the application of Spanish law.
