HC Deb 21 December 1961 vol 651 c177W
40. Mr. Loughlin

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what proportion of Civil Defence expenditure in the years prior to the year 1960–61 was allocated to the provision of deep air-raid shelters.

Mr. Renton

None since the reconstitution of the civil defence organisation under the Civil Defence Act, 1948.

41. Mr. Loughlin

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many deep air-raid shelters have been provided in the United Kingdom; what proportion of the total have been built for this purpose; and if he will state the categories of persons to whom places have been allocated in the event of nuclear attack.

Mr. Renton

Apart from the London underground railway system, and the seven associated deep tubes which were specially constructed for shelter purposes in the last war, there are about a hundred caves and tunnels giving varying degrees of overhead cover. No places have been allocated.
