HC Deb 09 May 1960 vol 623 c24W
Mr. Reynolds

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many single persons aged 65 years and over, whose total income does not exceed £275, and married couples, where either the husband or wife is aged 65 years or over, whose total income does not exceed £440, were exempted from income tax in the year ended 31st March, 1959, or at the most recent convenient date.

Sir E. Boyle

In 1959–60 the cases relieved from tax by age exemption numbered about ¾ million, of which about half were cases of married couples and half single persons.
