HC Deb 05 April 1960 vol 621 cc29-30W
53. Mr. W. Hamilton

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he is aware that local authorities are having to pay thousands of pounds in the form of housing improvement grants to individuals without regard to means; and, in view of the increasing rate burdens now being borne by local authorities, whether he will empower them to award such grants on the same basis as that used by the National Assistance Board.

Mr. Galbraith

No. Improvement grants are a valuable means of helping to maintain at small cost to public funds, an adequate stock of houses equipped with modern amenities.
