HC Deb 26 November 1959 vol 614 cc51-2W
52 and 53. Mr. Cleaver

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer (1) if he will arrange for a simpler system for claiming allowances for repairs, maintenance, insurance, etc., of property, against Schedule A tax assessment, so as to help the less well off owner-occupier to get full benefit of fair allowances without expert assistance;

(2) if he will issue an advisory leaflet to owner-occupiers, advising them on the types of expenditure in respect of which their Schedule A tax assessment can be reduced.

Sir E. Boyle

The existing claim forms are reasonably simple and contain instructions on how to make the claims. They invite taxpayers who want further information to apply to the Inspector of Taxes. I do not think a special leaflet is called for, but the instructions on the claim form are being amplified in some respects.
