asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies (1) how many people have been sentenced in Nyasaland since the start of the emergency for membership of an unlawful society; how many of them have received sentences of six months or over; and what is the maximum sentence;

(2) how many people have been sentenced in Nyasaland since the emergency for assisting in the management of an unlawful society; how many have received sentences of two years or more; and what has been the maximum sentence.

One hundred and forty-three persons have been sentenced for membership of unlawful societies. Of these, 55 have received sentences of 6 months or more, the maximum being 2½ year. Thirty-three persons have been sentenced for managing or assisting in the management of unlawful societies. Of these, 26 have received sentences of two years or more, the maximum being 5 years.
