HC Deb 10 November 1959 vol 613 c28W
82. Mr. G. M. Thomson

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies how many detainees under the Nyasaland emergency regulations are now kept in the Kanjedza detention centre; and what steps are being taken to provide them with adequate lighting and recreational and educational facilities.

Mr. J. Amery

367. The Governor informs me that lighting already exists in two compounds and will shortly be provided elsewhere. Reading material, games and cards are provided from various sources, including a library service provided by the British Council, and wireless amplifiers have been installed in one compound. Football matches have also been arranged. Special books for educational purposes are available on request and arrangements have been made to enable detainees with the requisite educational qualifications to enrol for correspondence courses free of charge to themselves.
