HC Deb 03 November 1959 vol 612 c38W
94. Dr. A. Thompson

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what steps he will take to meet the request of the town councils of Inverkeithing, Lochgelly and Cowdenbeath, as well as other councils in Fife, and of the Fife County Education Committee, to end the employment of schoolchildren for potato gathering.

Mr. Maclay

Subject to the enactment of the Expiring Laws Continuance Bill which is now before the House, I intend to continue progressively to reduce the number of children exempted from school to assist in the potato harvest, and to dispense entirely with their employment as soon as possible.
