HC Deb 05 May 1959 vol 605 c26W
75. Mr. Lewis

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer by how much he estimates that the present rate of Surtax would have to be increased to ensure an additional annual revenue of £63 million, £76 million, and £127 million, respectively.

Mr. Amory

Assuming that the top rate were left at its present level of 10s. in the £, all other rates would have to be increased by over one-half, over two-thirds and about one and a half times respectively. The maximum rate of 10s. would then become payable at £6,000, £6,000 and £4,000, respectively.
