HC Deb 17 March 1959 vol 602 c17W
74. Mr. Chetwynd

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government and Minister for Welsh Affairs what progress has been made in the prevention of pollution in the Rivers Tyne, Wear and Tees since the inception of the Rivers Board Act of 1948.

Mr. Bevins

Generally speaking, the Rivers Tyne, Wear and Tees are in a good state from their sources down to the tidal reaches. The river boards have no responsibility for the tidal waters, which is where the serious pollution occurs.
