§ 62. Mr. Ernest Daviesasked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation what steps towards standardisation of road signs in Europe have been taken by the European Conference of Ministers of Transport, the Council of Europe, and the Economic Commission of Europe, or other organisations on which he has representatives or official observers
§ Mr. NugentNeither the European Conference of Ministers of Transport nor, so far as I am aware, the Council of Europe has recently had this matter under review.
The 1949 Convention on Road Traffic, concluded under the auspices of the Economic Commission for Europe, contains a Protocol on Road Signs and Signals designed to set up a uniform standard in such matters. Fourteen European countries and six countries outside Europe are parties to this Convention; the United Kingdom has not acceded to it.
A number of agreements supplementary to the 1949 Protocol have been concluded, to one of which, that on road markings, the United Kingdom is a signatory.
