HC Deb 23 February 1959 vol 600 c118W
80. Mr. Skeffington

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he is satisfied that X-ray apparatus employed in footwear shops are operated without risk to customers and staff; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. R. A. Butler

The manufacturers and representatives of the users agreed to adopt, with effect from 1st July, 1958, safety requirements formulated by my Department on the basis of recommendations made by the Radioactive Substances Advisory Committee, relating to the manufacture and use of this apparatus. Existing equipment will be modified to conform with the requirements within five years. The requirements are designed to ensure that no direct harm can be caused to shop assistants or customers.
