HC Deb 02 February 1959 vol 599 cc14-5W
101. Mr. Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he is aware that Alfred Krupp has asked for an extension of the allied order that he should dispose of his coal and steel holdings on the ground that it is impossible for him to find purchasers for his holdings and if, instead of granting this extension of time, he will suggest that Her Majesty's Government should purchase these holdings or assist suitable British investors to purchase them.

Mr. Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he is aware that Alfred Krupp has asked for an extension of the allied order that he should dispose of his coal and steel holdings on the ground that it is impossible for him to find purchasers and if, instead of granting an extension of time, he will suggest to the Federal Government of Germany that they should purchase these holdings, if need be on a joint basis with Her Majesty's Government.

Mr. R. Allan

I am aware that an extension of time has been requested. While the Federal Government have a responsibility to ensure completion of deconcentration plans, it would not be appropriate to suggest to them particular methods of doing so, nor do I consider purchase by Her Majesty's Government practical.
