HC Deb 17 December 1959 vol 615 cc211-2W
Dr. A. Thompson

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department on what authority the Metropolitan Police confiscated twelve copies of "Lady Chatterley's Lover", imported from the United States of America by Mrs. Barbara Barr, step-daughter of the late D. H. Lawrence; and if he will give instructions for these books to be delivered to Mrs. Barr.

Mr. R. A. Butler

The books were stopped in the post during Customs examination, and the question of their delivery is a matter for my right hon. Friend the Postmaster-General. The action of the Metropolitan Police was confined to making an inquiry at the request of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
