HC Deb 21 April 1959 vol 604 cc34-5W
88. Mr. Hamilton

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what total sum would accrue to local authorities in Scotland if industry were rerated up to 100 per cent., assuming that all the increase were payable to them.

Mr. Maclay

The rates payable in respect of industrial and freight transport subjects in 1958–59 on the basis of rating at 25 per cent. of net annual value amounted to approximately £2.65 million.

I estimate that if these subjects had been rated at 50 per cent. of net annual value—as they will be as from 16th May next—and if there had been no change in the total amount of rates levied by local authorities in Scotland, this payment would have amounted to about £5.1 million; and if they had been rated at 100 per cent. the payment would have been about £9.5 million.
