§ 105. Mr. Haymanasked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation why in 1957–58 Cornwall was placed forty-fifth out of 48 English county highway authorities in grants for classified roads with £191 per mile, compared with £349 per mile for all such authorities.
§ Mr. NugentFigures of grants made per mile for maintenance and minor improvements on classified roads must be interpreted with caution. They naturally vary according to population, width of roads, volume of traffic, number of heavy vehicles and the proportion of Class III roads compared with Class I and II. In 1957–58 the allocation to Cornwall for this purpose represented 99.7 per cent. of the amount applied for by the Council, compared with an average for the whole country of 96 per cent.
§ 106. Mr. Haymanasked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation whether he will make a statement on the grant for major road improvements which Cornwall County Highway Authority may expect to get in the financial year 1959–60.
§ Mr. NugentWe shall be inviting the County Council to submit some schemes in 1959–60, but I cannot say at present how many grants it will be possible to make.
