HC Deb 04 December 1958 vol 596 c167W
78. Mr. Biggs-Davison

asked the Minister of Education how far the number of teachers in Essex county schools is below the quota laid down; what improvement has been made during the last year; and what measures have been taken, or are being considered, to attract older teachers back into service.

Mr. Geoffrey Lloyd

On 1st October this year the Essex local education authority was 341 teachers short of its quota for January, 1959, but it had 331 more teachers than in October, 1957. The authority has been taking vigorous steps by means of personal contacts, advertisement, and by relaxation of its normal retirement rules in suitable cases, to persuade teachers of pensionable age to stay in their schools or to return to them.
