§ 66. Sir F. Medlicottasked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation what is the cost per mile of providing kerbstones on main roads in rural areas; and if it is his policy to continue providing such kerbstones until all main roads throughout the country have been so dealt with.
§ Mr. WatkinsonMy policy for trunk roads in rural areas, which I have also recommended to all other highway authorities, is that vertical kerbs should not be used except where a footway is close to the carriageway or where, for some other reason, it is dangerous for vehicles to leave the carriageway. For a single carriageway in a rural area the cost of kerbing, whether vertical, splayed or flush, is about £4,500 per mile of road.
