HC Deb 27 March 1957 vol 567 c114W
Mr. G. R. Howard

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation whether, in view of the mining of the Italian tanker "Alcantara" in the Gulf of Suez last December, the southern approaches of the Suez Canal are still dangerous to shipping.

Mr. Watkinson

The Egyptians broadcast the following warning to shipping last NovemberUntil further notice the area north of latitude 29° north of the Gulf of Suez is hereby declared dangerous to navigation. Ships navigating in this area will do so at their own peril". The Admiralty promulgated this warning on 16th November, 1956, and it has not since been rescinded by Egypt. The matter has recently been taken up with the Secretary-General of the United Nations, and it is hoped that the position may be clarified as a result of his visit to Egypt.
